8 ways to get free exposure
Establishing a brand from scratch can be a daunting task.  It can also be an expensive one and your first handful of clients are usually the hardest to get.  But with an internet connection and an email account, getting your name ‘out there’ can be a lot easier than you think.
In this article I’ve put together a guide with 8 ways that you can get free exposure for your business.
  1. Give Away a ‘Free Sample’

    • Have you ever tasted the bourbon chicken at that Chinese food place in the food court and went ahead and bought an entree?  You can attract clients, customers and fans the same way.
    • Give away something of value that truly represents what you do and what you offer.  For it to really be effective it must be some of your best work.
    • Allow for easy sharing on social media
    • Make sure you are collecting some form of information so that you know who is truly interested in your product or service.
  2. Start a Blog

    • Determine who your reader and eventual customer is
    • Come up with a short list of keywords and long tail keywords that your targeted reader actively searches so that your blog can be relevant to them
      • Niche down your key words to be very specific.  (For example, instead of general keywords like ‘seafood restaurant’, use specific keywords like ‘best restaurant in Maryland for crab cakes’)
      • Focus your blog around these specific keywords

  3. Optimize for Search Engines

    • Optimize your website for search by including your targeted key words in your:
      • Page urls (shortlinks in WordPress)
      • Page titles
      • Meta data, tags and categories
    • Add a sitemap and get rid of bad links help your SEO as well

    • Create your social network pages.  Some will be better at conveying your message than others depending on your industry, but start with:
    • Make sure that your name is simple and synonymous across your social networks sites so that you are easy find.
    • Once you create them, don’t forget to use them!!  Engage with potential fans, curate content relevant to your market and reach out to leaders of your industry.  This will build sort of an online street team that will give you free exposure.
  6. Share Your Photos

    • Instagram is great social media tool for this and it’s great for building a following by only displaying your visual art
    • Free photo buckets like Picasa, Flickr and Photobucket are sharable and once again…free!!!
  7. Participate in Forums

    • Find a few relevant forums that people in your industry hang out at and participate in the discussions.
    • Don’t be all spammy.  You get more respect when you add to the conversation without asking for people to buy your product or service.  Most forums won’t allow random links to be included in your posts anyway.
    • Include your website in your signature.  If someone likes what you have to say, most likely they will check out your website to find out more about you.
  8. Reach Out to Your Network

    • Shoot an email to everyone you know and let them know what you are doing and ask them to visit your website.
    • You may have someone in your network that knows someone that needs your services so be sure to not skip anyone!
Using these 8 techniques for free exposure you should be able to get your first few clients in under 30 days.  As with most guerrilla marketing strategies, they may take a little time in the beginning but it will prove well worth it.
